Gursevak Powar – National Physiotherapy Month

Title(s):

Gursevak Powar, MPT BSc

Where do you work?

I work at Launch Rehab and the UBC Physical Therapy and Research Clinic.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing patients make progress in their recovery and achieve their goals. It’s a great feeling to know that I played a role in helping someone improve their quality of life and health.

What do you enjoy about your work?

I enjoy the diversity of my work and the fact that every day is different. Each patient is unique, with their own set of challenges and goals, and I enjoy working with them to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets their individual needs. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of my job, as I often have to think creatively to find solutions that will help patients overcome their obstacles.

What is a common misconception with your work?

A common misconception about my work is that it is primarily focused on massage and other passive treatments. While these can be useful in certain situations, my approach is much more focused on active rehabilitation and empowering patients to take an active role in their recovery.

What drew you to physical therapy?

I was drawn to physical therapy because I have always been interested in human movement and how the body works. I also have a passion for helping others and wanted to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What is unique about what you do?

A unique aspect of what I do is my biopsychosocial approach, which takes into account not only the physical aspects of my patients’ conditions but also the psychological and social factors that may be impacting their recovery. I also prioritize client-centred care, which means that I work closely with patients to develop treatment plans that are tailored to their individual needs, goals, and preferences. Finally, my emphasis on active rehabilitation means that I focus on helping patients develop the strength, flexibility, and endurance they need to get back to doing the things they love.

What is one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?

I can play three instruments: the drum kit, saxophone, and tabla, which are classical Indian drums.
