2025: A Year of Growth and Change for the PTRC

2025 has been a year of transformation for the Physical Therapy and Research Clinic (PTRC), marked by growing pains and realignment of goals to better meet the needs of the students under the guidance of the Department of Physical Therapy.

The year began with Philippe Tan stepping in as interim manager, while our current manager was on maternity leave. In the second quarter of the year, we welcomed Sandra Squire as the new PTRC director, who provided clear direction for the clinic’s future. We were also fortunate to add June to our new front desk team and Gurleen, who joined us through the Work Learn program. Both have been invaluable in supporting our administrative operations.

This year, the PTRC introduced student placements during the summer term, increasing the total number of students accommodated to 22. While this was a pilot initiative, we are proud to report its success and look forward to continuing this model in the future.

PTRC also participated in Imagine Day for the first time. Thanks to our enthusiastic therapist, Taylor, who represented the clinic and shared information about our services. This event gave us greater visibility among new students while also generating significant interest in the Master of Physical Therapy program.

While we celebrated many achievements, we also embraced change as several therapists pursued exciting new opportunities, with some advancing their clinical practice and others focusing on education. We’re proud to share that Sally Stelling, one of our supervising physiotherapists, has accepted a prestigious role as Co-Director of the Brain Wellness Program.

Her contributions have been invaluable, and her next chapter inspires us all. This transition also opens the door for emerging leaders like Gavin and Charlie to shine, guiding future students and continuing our excellent patient care.

As PTRC grows, we are also evolving our programs. This year will mark the final Neuro class offered by PTRC, which will be absorbed by the Brain Wellness Program under the leadership of Sally, after 2025.

Additionally, our FAME program will transition from a drop-in format to a block model, creating more opportunities for students to engage in one-on-one appointments. Blocks of classes, including the GLAD program, will be scheduled alongside the student placements. This will allow students to lead group sessions and closely monitor patient progress.

2026 promises exciting opportunities – not only for our students, but also for our team, who continue to rise to their potential to be leaders in their field. We look forward to building on this year’s successes and embracing new challenges that will strengthen the PTRC’s role in education and accessible patient care
